From the recording Time Gives Way
Has not my hand made ALL these things, and so they came into being?” declares the LORD. “These are the ones I look on with favor: those who are humble and contrite in spirit, and who tremble at my word. - Isaiah 66:2
I am now looking as much back on my life as I am looking forward. Some old mountains look like dots in the distance. Some small moments, a word, a phone call, a car ride, turned out to be key pivot points. Seasons I complained were impossible might have shifted with a little more character on my part. With just a little more “trembling”.
Looking ahead, my mortality murmurs for eternity, like someone talking in their sleep. But I’ve learned that the bigger existence I crave uses a small door. So let it begin. Right here.
Lyrics
small’s the place of nighttime prayer, what’s for dinner, bed-head hair / of rain on wind, take a spin, squinting at the stars / look, this is where we are
real’s the bruise I walk around / but I grew up, I left that town / moving on and moving in, I click the downtime by / I rarely have to cry
remind me to tremble, oh, tremble just a little / and breathe in the breach when he’s near / at the foot of the throne / half dream half home / a whisper, you’re bigger than here
now we catch eyes like we were young b’fore we got too smart for some / like dogs to tails, close just to fail / I don’t know where to start / who replants a heart?
remind me to tremble, oh, tremble just a little / when seams pull to faith or to fear / at the foot of the throne I’ll cast for home / and take my cues from bigger than here
could I start to say I’m sorry, for those miles and minutes / I rode them like they weren’t holy / just ghost, no spirit /
but all that’s fragile, tender in time, you gave for love of me
comes the day when debts are paid, who-dunnit solved, workweek made / a full embrace, end of the race / wintered seeds will bloom ‘till everywhere there’s room
remind me to tremble, oh, tremble just a little / and reach for the changes I feared / at the foot of the throne, I’ll turn for home / begin again, right from the end
remind me to tremble, oh, tremble just a little / and reach for the changes I feared / at the foot of the throne, you’re here, we’re home / begin again, let bigger in / begin again, start from the end here
