From the recording Time Gives Way
Some years back, I kicked down a small wall. I left the kids, husband and bills at home and took my dreamer self to a songwriting retreat on a mountain in Kauai. I also rented a convertible Mustang.
This song took its first breath there under the forest canopy, knitting itself together between my arrhythmic strums. I closed my eyes and saw the stars and sand and heard human voices – so numerous and noisy in time and space. All, therefore, potentially forgettable, dispensable. With so many, why care if one or one thousand gets misplaced? And yet, sacred tradition says otherwise. That each, each, each is seen, held and called. Why? The chorus names this unreasonable attention Love. A belonging that plucks souls out from between the twin egg beaters of chaos and unworthiness. A belonging that blinks me from hapless obscurity into a plane of unshakable security. Love calls me into expanding adventure, into glory, if you will.
I thank William Blake for the bridge – “to see a world in a grain of sand…” He, too, marveled how Love makes the smallest particle a boundless place.
Psalm 8: “When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them? You have made them a little lower than the angels and crowned them with glory and honor.”
Lyrics
a billion fiery stars each with a name / and souls like grains of sand never one the same / you hear the roar of all humanity / but everytime I pray / you’re here with me
I'd be caught in the chaos but I'm found in your love / on the heights of holy I’d be lost but I'm found in your love.
you raise the mountains from the ocean floor / you lift their face to see what we never saw before / I could be blind to nature's mysteries / but my very beating heart repeats to me
that I'd be caught in the chaos but I'm found in your love / and on the heights of holy I’d be lost but I'm found in your love.
Father, you wove this story / you called me from the start to carry your glory / you’ve bound me to your heart
to see a world in a grain of sand / heaven in a wildflower / infinity in the palm of your hand / eternity in an hour
on the heights of holy I’d be so lost but I'm found in your love
